NZ Identity Treaty of Waitangi

Te Reo Term 4 2016.

Te Reo Term 4 2016.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that...

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community. The Marae is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.

We have focussed on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Concept
Definition -
give the meaning of these concepts in your own words.
Tikanga
What they do like customs and traditions/the way they do certain things.
Pōwhiri
The welcoming ceremony on a marae to welcome the visitors and be accepted into the marae.
Tangata whenua
The local people or tribe(welcome people onto the marae).
Manuhiri
The visitors to a marae.
Tūrangawaewae
Their place to stand their home and where they belong which gives them rights and responsibilities.
Whanaungatanga
A relationship or connection withing family/belonging

I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury

I can take action to improve the water cycle in Canterbury

In this project I was working with Mollyanne and we decided to create an online children's book.

In this project we decided that our success criteria was:
Eye catching covers
An interesting title
Colourful illustrations
Jokes spread around the book
Rhyme if possible

Overall our project met this criteria because our book had all of these traits and was successful.

This is our final product
Book titled 'S P L A S H !'Read this free book made on StoryJumper

Koru Games

                              Koru Games

The sport I participated in was Touch Rugby

My two highlights from Koru games were:
Having a device there because I could listen to music and contact my friends who were in different sports.
Working as a team with different people from my class as well as my friends because we often don't get the chance.

Something I am proud of is stopping a lot of tries from the other team because I was one of the faster people in our team so I was great at defense.

Some advice I would give to next years' year sevens is try your hardest and give everything a go, even if it means getting out there and out of your comfort zone its very fun and definitely worth it.

CARE: My progress so far

The CARE award that I am working towards is Bronze but I am only two care ticks away.

The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is community because have highlighted everything off under community.

The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is excellence because it is where I have the least care ticks.

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by showing these leadership traits: Resilience and being goal focused.

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level Relational because I can use my care values independently but I need to be reminded every now and then.

My CARE Progress

I have done a check of my CARE progress so far this year.

I am doing ok but I could do a little better because I am a little behind but I am trying to catch up.

How far away are you from reaching your BRONZE
I am quite far away I need three more certificates and then a few more ticks after that.

The area of CARE that I need to try harder in C / A / R / E
Because those are the areas I have the least ticks in and need to improve in.

To achieve my BRONZE award quicker I need to achieve more in the assembly section by paying attention to the speaker.

The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in CARE is try my hardest to get as many certificates.

We will review CARE progress again at the end of the term.

Student Led Conference Reflection

The things I enjoyed most about my SLC were:
being able to show my parents all of the things we have been learning.

What went well and why?
All of my links worked so that was a relief because last year some of mine didn't work even after the teachers tried them before hand.
What were the challenges you faced when preparing and presenting your SLC?
when we first got there the Wifi dropped out so we started a bit late but I managed to complete my conference in the time we had left.
What changes would you make for next time and why?
Explain the points more and read all of my writing because we were running low on time so I just read the introduction and conclusion.

The Arts Rotation: Music

- Music

I can describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

Over the past 7 weeks I have been learning to describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

I can describe these characteristics in a piece of music;

Term 1 Integrated Learning - Leadership

We have been learning all about What makes a good leader.

We identified that good leaders show six main character traits. These are ; show integrity, resilience, be motivational, goal focused, trustworthy and be an active thinker.

The leadership trait that I think I show the most is resilience because I try my hardest and try to never give up.

The leadership trait I would most like to develop is trustworthiness because I am usually late and always losing my things.

Something NEW I have learned about leadership is; what it takes to be a leader.

The SOLO level that I reached during this unit of learning is relational because I can compare and contrast the traits of different leaders.

My next step in learning about leadership is to apply everything that I have learned about leadership to my own leadership roles.

striking and fielding

Striking and Fielding

WALT: Apply Striking and Fielding activities in a range of sports and activities.

Link to modelling book on online zone.

My Strengths

The striking strategies I was able to effectively demonstrate during the games we played were, striking the ball with the right stance and not hitting any of them in the face.

The throwing and catching strategies I was able to effectively demonstrate during the games we played were catching the ball when thrown it and successfully not hitting my team mates in the face with the ball.

My Next Steps

To improve my striking of a ball I need to be able to ALWAYS hit the ball in the direction I am trying to because at the moment it barely ever goes where I want it to.

To Improve my catching and fielding I need to make sure that if the ball is coming towards me I try to catch it because sometimes i just stand there or it hits me or it just goes strait past me.

The game that I enjoyed the most was Rounds because I enjoyed hitting the ball and running around the basses .

I really enjoyed our fielding and striking unit but I am looking forward to our next unit, koru Games.

flag research

Here is an example of my learning that we have done about the changing of the flag.
My opinion with the flag changing is that we keep our current flag for many reasons. Some of those reasons are in the doc on that link so check it out for more.

leadership in the food forest and the junior classrooms

Yesterday and today all of us year eights helped out in the food forest. All of the year sevens are away at camp so all of the year eights are helping out in the junior classes and the food forest. I am going to tell you about the food forest. You see the first group helped the year fours harvest some seeds. I was not in that group.

The second group, which was my group did all the weeding. We spent all afternoon weeding and getting rid of dead plants. That was yesterday today we spent the middle section of the day harvesting sweet corn. We harvested a lot of corn before going on to more weeding but this time in a different section.

We had to be very careful when harvesting the corn because mixed in with the corn shoots were Deadly Nightshade berries. Nightshade is very poisonous and we could have died if we had eaten some berries or they had come in contact with an open wound.

The year eights weeding in the food forest

We also helped out in some junior classes. We helped out in room 14,17,18 and 19. I am in group G and we helped out in room nineteen yesterday and room eighteen today. We helped them with writing and maths as well as action stations.

I made friends with a little girl called Chloe she was in room 19. My group and I had lots of fun working with the juniors and we learned some new skills. I think working with the juniors helped my leadership.

I believe working with the junior classes and in the food forest helped me to become a better leader.
